Anyan Iyer, who joined Cisco in January 2000 as the crash was beginning, identifies what actually killed the dot-com era. Users weren't ready (dial-up dominated, mobile didn't exist, e-commerce logistics were immature). Capital vanished (IPO window shut, venture dried up). Metrics were fabricated (Webvan, pets.com burned cash chasing phantom conversion). Infrastructure got catastrophically overbuilt (Global Crossing, WorldCom spent billions on fiber nobody used). The model was broken—companies scaled early and hoped revenue would follow.

Today's story is inverted. Hyperscalers including OpenAI, Meta, Google, xAI, and Microsoft are scrambling to keep up with demand. Nvidia's Jensen Huang framed it plainly: every hyperscaler "dramatically underbuilt." Forecasts have been too low. "We're not building for speculation. We're building for active workloads."

Steven Fiorillo argues this isn't 1999 because the largest companies in the world—Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta—are funding data center buildouts from organic cash flow, not debt or venture speculation. Microsoft's financials illustrate the point. Since fiscal 2022, the company has decreased long-term debt by 14% while increasing CapEx allocation by 170%. It now generates $70 billion in free cash flow, allocates $64 billion to CapEx, repurchases $18 billion in shares, and pays $24 billion in dividends simultaneously. That's not a bubble signature.

But distortions exist in parallel. Fermi, a nine-month-old startup with only a lease to land in Texas, is planning an IPO around a $14 billion valuation. Retail traders are posting triple and quadruple-digit percentage gains on unprofitable and pre-revenue companies. Some are trading naked options on speculative equities.

Both things are true. Martin Scrella offers a useful frame: when Nvidia invests in OpenAI, OpenAI signs compute deals with Oracle, and Oracle commits to buying Nvidia chips, it looks circular. But the measure of success isn't the trading between partners. It's third-party demand. Token consumption is high and growing. Users are demanding it. Companies are demanding it.

Speed to monetization has changed

The dot-com era had a structural disadvantage: building required infrastructure that didn't exist. MP3.com had the right idea (Spotify's future business) but IPO'd with a domain and a business plan. It needed to build databases, negotiate licensing with every record label, construct servers, develop mobile apps—all before most people could listen on mobile at all.

Today's startups inherit working infrastructure. Cloud hosting exists. App stores exist. Payment processing is instant. A B2B software company can call a prospect, offer a product, and have them signed up and paying by tomorrow. The capital and time required to reach product-market fit has collapsed. That accelerates the path to profitability or decisive failure.

Legacy SaaS is under pressure, and newer companies are cannibalizing market share from existing players rather than creating entirely new market cap from thin air.

Compute constraints are real

Nando De Freitas frames scaling not as more parameters but as using massive compute effectively to maximize throughput of data ingestion. Models are trained on nearly all of the web plus a growing dataset of synthetic data. "We're still compute hungry because there's a ton more that we could achieve if we only had more compute."

Every ChatGPT query generates training data. With reasoning models, each interaction becomes both a training data point and a reinforcement learning environment. OpenAI trains on free-tier user data (unless users opt for enterprise plans), meaning the dataset expands with every user interaction. Better models drive adoption, adoption generates more data.

Monetization pathways exist. OpenAI has a freemium model, an ads model, and an agent-to-commerce model. Recent announcements signal commerce integration is coming. The spend required to sustain that infrastructure is enormous, but the revenue runway is also lengthening.

The cash reserve signal

One contrarian indicator: money market fund balances are at record highs, suggesting institutional capital remains cautious despite retail enthusiasm visible on social media. Retail is posting screenshots of Robinhood gains; institutions are sitting in cash. That's not panic, but it's not full conviction either.

The closest parallel to 1999 is selective. Some companies—Fermi, companies filing pre-revenue IPOs, traders betting on options on unprofitable businesses—are trading on vibes. But the infrastructure being built by the megacaps is funded from actual cash generation, deployed against measurable demand, and constrained by compute availability rather than capital availability. The compute bottleneck is the constraint now, not the narrative.
