Apple applied that principle everywhere. When presenting the CNC mill that manufactured the MacBook Pro unibody, Apple didn't celebrate the machine. It centered Johnny Ive, the designer using the tool to create something beautiful he could never make with his hands alone. The focus was on human capability unlocked, not machine capability replacing.
AI is pitched the opposite way. Altman says "maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer." The AI sits at the center. A Jobs-style version would be "Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, humans can use AI to figure out how to cure cancer." It's a small tweak with massive difference.
The narrative inside the labs—demon thesis, existential stakes, superintelligence race—doesn't work for people outside them. And it doesn't have to. There is a human-centric, empowering way to pitch AI that actually reflects how the technology works in practice. People at the labs know humans will use AI to cure cancer, not that AI will do it autonomously. They know the sleep consultant example is genuinely good, offering free medical advice for people who can't see a doctor. But that's not what's being amplified.
Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, is the closest thing to a Jobs-like voice in AI leadership. He doesn't have the catastrophe quotes. Two documentaries about him are inspiring. When he talks about curing cancer with AI, it lands differently because he has a Nobel Prize and is actually solving the problem. Yet he has a fraction of the reach of Altman, Amodei, or Musk, partly because he runs a lab inside a larger company rather than leading a standalone AI firm.
The core failure is leaving humanity out of the pitch. The industry has chosen or defaulted into a narrative of machines becoming all-powerful, humans becoming obsolete, and civilization entering a dark age if the wrong company wins the AI race. That story works for fundraising and venture signaling. It is actively losing the culture war.
Small rhetorical shifts by Altman and Amodei could move the needle. So could founders the industry hasn't heard of yet. Until AI's leaders pitch the technology the way Jobs pitched the Mac—as a tool that makes humans more capable, more creative, more human—the techlash will keep winning.
